FAQs

How do I know if my thermal fuse has tripped? ›

How to tell if a thermal fuse has blown? To test if your thermal fuse has blown, touch the right side of your multimeter lead to the right side of the fuse, and repeat with the left multimeter lead. If the multimeter needle fails to move, this indicates the thermal fuse has blown.

What happens when the thermal fuse goes out? ›

A tripped thermal fuse can have two effects. In some dryers, it simply shuts off electricity to the heating element. This means a dryer will run, but it will only air-dry clothing. In other models, the thermal fuse stops power completely.

What should a good thermal fuse read? ›

At room temperature, testing the thermal fuse should produce a reading of zero. But if a thermal fuse is tested when it is heated to its limit, a reading of infinity should be produced. We strongly recommend that you test your thermal fuse at room temperature.

Will the dryer spin if the thermal fuse is blown? ›

In many cases, if your dryer has a malfunctioning thermal fuse, the dryer will not turn on at all. However, with some other dryers' models, the drum will turn and the dryer will operate, but the heating element will not turn on to heat up the clothing inside the dryer.

Is it OK to bypass a thermal fuse? ›

Operating a dryer with a bypassed thermal fuse is both unnecessary and unsafe, so a bypass should only be done long enough to troubleshoot a potential problem. Even short usage without a thermal fuse in place could result in irreparable damage to the appliance or injury to yourself.

Do thermal fuses reset themselves? ›

A thermal fuse is a cutoff which uses a one-time fusible link. Unlike a thermal switch which may automatically reset itself when the temperature drops, the thermal fuse is more like an electrical fuse: a single-use device that cannot be reset and must be replaced when it fails or is triggered.

What blows a thermal fuse? ›

The number one cause of thermal fuses blowing is the build-up of lint inside the exhaust venting which makes the dryer overheat. At least once a year you should detach the venting from the rear of the appliance and use a vent brush to clean out the lint and any other debris to ensure good air flow.

Can you replace a thermal fuse with a regular fuse? ›

No, a thermal fuse has a metallic envelope to “sense” temperature of a power dissipating element, so they fuse by “external” temperature. On the other hand a normal fuse act on internal fusing element temperature (melting point), with a small derating factor for ambient temperature.

What is the alternative to a thermal fuse? ›

Thermal switches are an obvious alternative to thermal fuses. A thermal switch opens when it detects an overtemperature.

Can you check a thermal fuse with a multimeter? ›

If you suspect a fault with a thermal fuse in your appliance, you need to perform a continuity test on it using a multimeter- as the thermal fuse will display no visual indicators of its fault.

How do I know what thermal fuse to buy? ›

Fuse is also called thermal fuse, and the selection of thermal fuse is based on the four points of rated operating temperature, measured operating temperature, holding temperature, and maximum limit temperature.

Will a thermal fuse keep a dryer from starting? ›

If the drum light doesn't turn off, a failed door switch is the likely reason the dryer won't start. A blown thermal fuse often prevents an electric dryer from starting.

How much does it cost to fix a thermal fuse? ›

Other Parts
Faulty Dryer PartAverage Cost Range to Repair or Replace
Thermal fuse$80 – $130
Dryer thermostat$100 – $260
Coil$150 – $300
Vent$75 – $150

Can I solder a thermal fuse? ›

A word on soldering thermal fuses. This, while in theory possible, is not advised. When soldering you have a significant risk of tripping the fuse and destroying it that way. If you succeed, you still have the problem, that solder melts at around 170C which can be close or ever lower than the temperature of the fuse.
