This month the PWH Cultural Inclusion & Diversity (CI&D) Committee asked for specific insights and best practices as a great way to highlight our members and colleagues to ensure that multiple voices are heard. Here was one of our "What I Wish You Knew" submissions below:"Some people may think that #Juneteenth is only celebrated in Texas, where it has been an official state holiday since 1980, however many other states and companies recognize the day as either an official holiday or observance. The #Emancipation Proclamation only applied to states that rebelled against the union; it did not apply to slaves in Union states (or states occupied by the Confederacy). Have you encountered any challenges in promoting equality and inclusivity within the arts, and how does your organization address and overcome these obstacles to create a more inclusive space?

Alternative civilityCivility is commonly defined as formal politeness and courtesy in behaviour or speech. This should be a common modis of communication in civil societies.However, the ‘civil’ in civility should demonstrate essential component of democracy. Democracy in itself should entail government by the whole population. Therefore, for any system to expect civility, the system should be inclusive in its operations, fair and equitable. Alternative civility operates where civility is used to gain an upper hand to undermine those usually excluded, to seek subjugation, to step over the minoritised and to maintain the White peak top in inequitable establishments. So, to ensure civility, equity, equality and full inclusion should be the modus operandi within systems. There is no point in suppressing individuals and using ‘civility’ to expect them to toe the lines of established unequal status quo.#alternative-civility, #equity #fairness #equality
